Will I be automatically disqualified during the hiring process if I have an arrest in my past?
A criminal conviction is not necessarily grounds for removal from the selection process.
3.
How long will the selection process take before I am hired?
It is on a case-by-case basis, but under most circumstances the selection process will take four to six months.
4.
If I am certified with another law enforcement agency can I transfer from that agency without having to attend the academy?
You may transfer from any agency. Typically, those with law enforcement certifications from the State of Virginia will be exempt from having to attend the academy. Those applicants are still required to go through the a 12-week process of field training or 28 days for correctional training. All other applicants will have to attend and complete training at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. Candidates possessing an out-of-state law enforcement certification may be eligible for increased salary benefits.
5.
Is the starting salary higher for individuals with previous law enforcement experience?
Starting salary is based on many factors including law enforcement experience, education, military experience, and language fluency. Any of these factors may qualify an applicant to start at a higher salary.
6.
Is there a cut-off age for a sworn position?
No, there is no cut-off age for becoming a deputy. You must be at least 21 years of age upon the date of employment as a deputy.
7.
Is there a residency requirement?
Sworn applicants are not required to live in Loudoun County.
8.
What are the vision requirements for a sworn deputy sheriff position?
Uncorrected vision not worse than 20/200, provided there has been at least six months of successfully wearing soft contact lenses. Without soft contact lenses, uncorrected vision cannot be worse than 20/100. In any case, vision must be correctable to 20/20.
9.
What will my schedule be like if I am hired in a sworn position?
Deputies assigned to patrol will be assigned to the day (6:00 am to 5:30 pm), evening (3:00 pm to 2:30 am) or midnight (7:30 pm to 7:00 am) squads. All squads rotate days off and work a total of approximately 15 days a month. Shifts do not rotate. Deputies assigned to the Adult Detention Center work on four squads separated into two shifts, 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, and work 14 days a month. Deputies assigned to the Loudoun County Courts Complex work Monday through Friday on 8-hour to 10-hour shifts or longer depending on length of court cases.
10.
Is there a take home car program?
Yes, Field Deputy applicants residing within Loudoun County are permitted to take their assigned cars home.
11.
How many deputies are in the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office?
We are authorized for a force of 435 sworn positions.
