1. When does a will or estate become a matter of public record?

When a will has been admitted to record, the will then becomes a matter of public record and may be viewed on the clerk’s office’s public database.

2. Where is the clerk's office public database?

The public database is available in the clerk's office of the circuit court:
18 E. Market St.
Leesburg, VA 20176

3. How do I find the will I am researching?

Using the public computers in the clerk’s office, simply type in the decedent’s last name, highlight wills/fiduciary under the instrument category and then click "search."

If the will has been admitted to probate, the database will provide a grid showing the public records pertaining to the searched will. These records and images will include the will, the order, the list of heirs, and bond as well as many other documents that are recorded during the estate administration process.

4. Do I need an appointment to view records on the public database?

No. You may go directly to the clerk’s office during their normal business hours. However, you must have the decedent’s last name in order to begin your search.

5. Can I make copies of the records I find?

Yes. Copies cost $0.50 per page. Assistance is available at the clerk’s office information counter for obtaining and purchasing your copies.
